Designing architecture by crossing digital and living

Because of the difficulties of travel, especially for the lecturers who must come from far away, we had to make the decision to postpone the symposium "Projecting architecture, at the crossroads of digital and living".
As soon as new dates are set, probably in early 2020, we will let you know.

To be informed of new dates, you can fill in the registration form for the conference. We will use it to communicate the new dates, then we will open a new registration list.

The symposium aims to adress the ways in which digital methods can generate approaches to complexity of spatial organizations, whether natural or artificial. This interrogation is part of the production of knowledge as the invention of new organizations. The impact of digital on human organizations within the territories (agricultural, urban, landscape, architectural, natural) will also be adressed in the debates.

The symposium will establish a dialogue between scientists and designers around methodological issues at the crossroads of complexity and digital. The aim is to shed light on possible cross-disciplinary contributions.

The "deluge of data" fuels provocations, debates, fears and enthusiasms. Big data, Artificial Intelligence, modeling, settings, algorithms, are now at the heart of innumerable scientific practices and design practices. Architecture is present, for the moment, only marginally.

At the same time, within the scientific domains that concern the living and / or the territory (biology, geography, ecology), complex approaches are grounding new theories currently in force.

In the fields of design (architecture, landscape, urban planning, art, design), the logic of complex ecosystem-based planning has emerged recently; they deduce complex ways of working from ecology and ecosystems. They can thus go beyond the production of sustainable devices, to achieve dynamic balance objectives.

In the field of art, many works, among which we can mention only the Dandelions of Edmond Couchot and Michel Bret (1988) express new visions of nature that take advantage of digital cultures, of systemic approaches and of the evolutivity of living organisms. These works re-examine our confrontation with the real and they renew the constitution of an artistically chosen
reality.

Axis 1 - From digital to complexity of life: the role of digital in the approach of territorial complexities.

It is a question here of tackling the methodological and epistemological stakes related to the introduction of digital technology as an inspiration for methods. These issues will be questioned from the perspective of the discovery of the existing : what are they when it comes to better understanding the functioning of complex territorial systems both in the context of academic research, as in the context of territorial diagnostics with projective aim? The issues related to digital as a method will also be questioned in terms of the approach of projection : what are they when the purpose is to propose a complex territorial project in resonance with the innumerable users as with the natural environments without constantly changing?

How to appropriate the collection and exploitation of data and how to develop specific methods to model the territorial complexity by digital ? To what extent can datamining approaches, complex modeling, artificial intelligence allow to "cultivate" virtuously self-organization, emergence, resilience, mutualisation, solidarity, etc.?

Axis #2

Highly used in architecture, engineering or design, bio-mimicry is a mode of design that is inspired by the living to offer innovative forms.

Systemic approaches to life have renewed bio-mimetic approaches, opening the way to bio-inspiration or ecosystemic biobimicry. The latter is presented as a
complex alternative to the more directly analog versions of so-called formal and functional bio-mimicry.

Digital technology proposes, as cybernetics had outlined, ways of capturing and reproducing the complex mechanisms of life.

In order to highlight ways of renewing project approaches through bio-mimicry, the conference is positioned at the crossroads of digital and systemic.

This axis therefore aims at contributions from researchers in life sciences, using methods of data mining, artificial intelligence, etc. Mirroring, contributions highlighting bio-inspired design methods taking advantage of digital methods are also expected.
